The challenge
Growth had taken the bank past an asset threshold that brought closer supervisory attention. The board wanted a Chief Risk Officer with experience at a larger institution who would still be comfortable building a function rather than inheriting one.
Our approach
We agreed a profile with the risk committee chair before approaching anyone, then spoke with sixty-two senior risk leaders at banks one size up. Every finalist presented a ninety-day plan to the committee, which made the final choice a clear one.
The outcome
The appointment was made on the first search. The new Chief Risk Officer rebuilt the risk framework within a year, and the bank's next supervisory review recognised the progress.
The plan each finalist brought to the committee told us more than any interview could.
